Can you build a Shopify store for free? An honest answer

You can build the whole thing for nothing. You cannot sell on it for nothing — here is exactly where the line sits.

You can build a complete Shopify store without paying anything. You cannot take a single order on it without paying. That's the honest shape of it, and knowing where the line sits saves a lot of wasted effort.

What's genuinely free

The trial. Shopify gives you a trial period to build in. Full admin, full theme editing, products, everything except taking real orders.

Free themes. Shopify's own free themes — Dawn and its siblings — are genuinely good. Fast, accessible, well-structured, actively maintained. A free theme with excellent product photography beats a paid theme with mediocre photography every time. Customising Dawn.

Development stores. If you have a Shopify Partner account (free to create), you can make unlimited development stores with no trial clock. They can't take real orders, but you can build indefinitely. This is what developers use — development stores and staging.

Free apps. A reasonable number of useful apps have free tiers. Be sparing anyway — free apps still cost you page weight, which costs conversions. How many apps is too many.

Your own labour. Product photography on a phone in daylight, copy you write yourself, the setup work. For a small catalogue this is genuinely most of the project.

Where it stops being free

The plan. The moment you want to take an order, you need a paid plan. There's no free selling tier.

Transaction fees. If you use an external payment gateway rather than Shopify Payments, the platform charges a percentage on every order on top of what the gateway takes. At even modest turnover this is often more than the plan itself — the maths is in which plan to choose.

Gateway fees. Every payment provider takes a percentage plus a fixed amount. Unavoidable, on any platform.

A domain. Ten to twenty a year. You can technically trade on the .myshopify.com address; it looks like you're not serious.

The costs people don't count

  • Photography. The single highest-return investment for most stores, and the one most often skipped.
  • Your time. A weekend of setup is a weekend. It isn't free, it's just not invoiced.
  • App creep. Five apps at €20–40 each quietly exceeds the platform cost.
  • Mistakes. A shipping rule that undercharges by €15 an order costs more in a month than a setup review would have.

What "free" is genuinely enough for

  • Validating an idea before committing.
  • A small catalogue where you're doing everything yourself.
  • Learning the platform before hiring anyone.
  • Building the store while you finish the content.

That's a real and respectable path. Plenty of good stores started exactly there.

Where paying early actually pays

Four things worth money even on a tight budget:

  1. Photography, if you can't take good ones yourself.
  2. Two hours of review before launch — catches the shipping rule, the untested payment method and the missing redirects for a fraction of a full build. Far and away the best-value spend available.
  3. Redirects, if you're moving from an existing site. Non-negotiable — migrating without losing SEO.
  4. Catalogue structure, if the catalogue is large. Expensive to redo.

Everything else genuinely can wait.

The trap

Building for free is fine. Building for free and then discovering the transaction fee, the app subscriptions and the plan cost after you've committed is not. Do the arithmetic on your expected turnover before launch, not after the first invoice.

Free gets you a finished store. It doesn't get you a trading one — and the gap between the two is a number you should calculate before you start, not discover in month two.
